Anonymous: I really want to become a makeup guru/beauty expert on YouTube. I know it’s stupid. My mother wants me to be a psychiatrist, and I enjoy helping people, but I want to do it through makeup. And yes, I have tried talking to her about it, but she doesn’t care. I really want to follow the dreams that I have had since I was a little kid, but I do not want to disappoint my mother. What do I do?

There is nothing stupid with following your dreams, but sometimes our egos will make dreams for us instead of our hearts. So, with that being said, go within and figure out what the true motivations are behind your career ambitions. Is it to be famous? To get noticed? For likes? To have others validate your worth? Or is it because you really love makeup and you enjoy helping others and combining your two passions is your dream? So, search within and figure out why you desire what you desire, and, in the meantime, I will help you figure out your next steps and how to deal with your mom.

Now, if you are really serious about becoming a beauty guru/expert on YouTube, there are some steps that are required. First, do you have your makeup license? Most people will not listen to someone who does not have more experience than they do, so going to cosmetology/beauty school and learning all that you can about your craft would be very helpful. But it will also allow you to perfect your skills, which is always a plus. And, it will also allow you to give all of yourself to your craft. Now, the next step after that would be getting a job as a makeup artist to perfect your skills and build your experience which will help you build up your following.

Now, as you are building your client base, you could let each client know about your YouTube channel and all that you have to offer and let them know to mention you, your services and your YouTube channel to all of their family and friends. That way you could market your makeup services, as well as build your following on YouTube. You could also market makeup classes through your YouTube channel, and have in-person and video session classes, which could be another source of revenue for you. You could hold makeup parties, for a fee, and teach others how to do flawless makeup. You could even possibly record the events, for your YouTube channel, with permission of course.

And I am laying out steps that you may want to take because I want you to know that accomplishing this goal will not be easy or quick. So, if you are in it for the wrong reasons, such as fame and validation, you might want to rethink this dream of yours. It will take a lot of time, energy and dedication to reach the outcome that you desire. But all of the work will seem like a cakewalk if you are truly in for it for the long haul and truly love what you do. And on your journey, there will be naysayers that will try and make you question yourself and your decisions, but just ignore them.

Naysayers are people that project their insecurities and beliefs of themselves and what they believe they can accomplish onto others and other’s dreams, so once again, ignore them. And these naysayers may be your boyfriend, your friend, or possibly even your mom. Having naysayers, especially if they are your loved ones, should not stop you from going after your dreams and reaching them. And the path to the life of your dreams is filled with stops and starts, turns and roadblocks but they will not deter you if you really desire to be a make-up guru/beauty expert on YouTube. But I also want to let you know that the level of success you are reaching for might come when you want it to or it might not, but just remember that it is a process.

And when it comes to followers and getting followers it is okay to be disheartened by the fact that your followers may not come when you want them to or how you want them to, but you have to continue and just know that there will always be bumps in the road. And just continue going after your dreams and your goals. And throughout this whole entire process, be true to yourself and never pretend to be something that you are not. And when it comes to your mom, she will respect your hustle and how hard you are working to make your dreams come true. It may not be the path she wanted for you, but it is a path that you chose and one in which you are giving your all to. And it all comes down to communicating with your mom. She may not listen, but you have to speak your peace and go after what will make you the happiest.

And honestly, who hasn’t disappointed their parents? You are supposed to! When we were born, our parents envisioned a life for us that was not of our own making, so when we actually grow up and create our own life, they may be shocked, dismayed, and even a little disappointed in our life and life choices but it’s a life we have created because we chose to love ourselves enough to live an authentic life. So, I know she’s your mom, but who cares if she is disappointed in you. Love yourself, love your passion, love your career, love your dreams and go out there and live your best life. Who cares what others think, no matter who they are. Just go out there and conquer the world.
